Job summary

Catholic Charities of Baltimore is seeking a Program Assistant for the Weinberg Housing & Resource Center (WHRC) in Baltimore, MD. This direct-service role supports adults experiencing homelessness in a busy, on-site shelter environment.

Shift is 3:00 PM–11:00 PM, Saturday through Wednesday, with a focus on safety, resident care, documentation, and de-escalation. Candidates should be patient, reliable, and compassionate, with strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• One year of related experience preferred, particularly with homelessness or at-risk populations.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to stay courteous, patient, calm, and professional in challenging situations.
• Ability to intervene in and de-escalate conflict respectfully and effectively.
• Dependable attendance and punctuality.
• Ability to use, or willingness to learn, basic computer systems, email, online training platforms, and required software.

Responsibilities

• Provide respectful, client-centered support that helps residents feel valued and treated with dignity.
• Monitor activity throughout the building to maintain a safe environment for residents, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
• Respond to resident concerns, incidents, emergencies, and crises calmly and professionally.
• Help de-escalate conflicts using respectful communication and established safety procedures.
• Assist residents with essential services including meals, clothing, laundry, hygiene needs, and maintaining safe living spaces.
• Orient residents and volunteers to services, expectations, resources, policies, and program procedures.
