Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Lab Support Tech I to collect blood samples, process specimens, and support hospital laboratory operations. The role includes venipuncture, specimen registration, test ordering, and ensuring accurate workflow across age groups.

Evening shifts, PPE compliance, and strong English communication are required. Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma, valid driver’s license, and PHLEBOTOMY training; ASCP certification is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Phlebotomy training and ASCP certification or eligibility preferred.
• Experience in phlebotomy and hospital lab workflows preferred.
• Fluent English communication skills essential.

Responsibilities

• Collect venous blood samples using standard venipuncture techniques across all ages.
• Receive, label, and prioritize specimens in the LIS/PACS system.
• Maintain clean, organized drawing stations and restock supplies.
• Register courier-delivered specimens and troubleshoot printers as needed.
• Order tests and manage dictionaries/panels within the hospital system.
• Provide courteous telephone coverage and assist callers.
• Perform capillary collections (heel sticks) as required.
• Support ER with rapid, accurate specimen handling and PPE compliance.
• Assist with general lab duties and inventory management.
• Adapt to shifts, provide cross-coverage, and train staff as needed.
