Job summary

MercyOne Northeast Iowa is seeking a part-time Medical Secretary for the Waterloo area. The role involves gathering patient demographics and financial information, data entry, room assignment, and patient escorting to the correct area.

The position requires English proficiency, data entry skills, familiarity with medical terminology, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Reads, writes English and communicates effectively with patients, visitors, staff and physicians.
• Completion of Medical Secretary program or general office training preferred.
• One year medical office experience (scheduling, insurance, or registration) preferred.
• Hospital experience and/or medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills with Windows experience; familiarity with database software and mainframe systems.
• Ability to convey a positive image and communicate tactfully with staff, patients and the public.
• Ability to work with diverse groups and under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Gathers patient demographic and financial information. Obtains appropriate signatures.
• Answers telephone; bed assignments; stat cleans; communicate with house supervisor.
• Informs patient of hospital regulations; secures armband; obtain signatures on documents.
• Makes determinations regarding need for ABN waiver.
• Assures patient is escorted/transported to the assigned area; meet and greet as registration begins.
• Scans physician orders, drivers licenses, insurance cards, consents, etc.
• Pre-register all scheduled tests.
• Adheres to safety, infection control and HIPAA/EMTALA policies.
