Job summary

Carleton College’s Library seeks an Evening Supervisor & Student Experience Specialist to oversee evening and weekend operations, mentor student staff, and collaborate on projects to improve space and patron engagement, including user research and stacks maintenance.

The role supports Access Services with course reserves and engages with Bridge Consortium peers from St. Olaf, working two rotating schedules; compensation is $26.50 per hour.

Qualifications

  • Four-year degree or equivalent library experience required.
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills with a service-oriented approach.
  • Flexibility and ability to work with faculty, students, staff, and the public.
  • Technological proficiency and ability to learn new software/systems.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to lift 20+ pounds and perform physical tasks.
  • Discretion and sound judgment in diverse situations.
  • Ability to handle stress and emergencies.
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and accurate.
  • Adaptability in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with Carleton and St. Olaf colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide circulation services including borrowing, renewal, and return of materials and loanable tech.
  • Serve as the sole professional staff member during evening/weekend shifts and communicate/triage issues.
  • Supervise building closing to maintain safety after hours.
  • Guide patrons in using library space and technology; maintain welcoming environment.
  • Lead and mentor student staff; contribute to training.
  • Uphold library policies to ensure fair use of resources.
  • Assist with course reserves during evenings/weekends.
  • Set up and support evening/weekend library events.
  • Conduct user research to improve student experience during evenings/weekends.
  • Engage with students to gather input for technology and collections.
  • Survey library space and environment to collect data and identify needs.
  • Assess friction points and propose improvements to UX.
  • Evaluate wayfinding and signage for accessibility.
  • Regular stack inventories and shelf-reading to maintain accuracy.
  • Assist with shifting projects to maximize shelf space.
  • Coordinate student workers on stack tasks.
  • Monitor collection health and mis-shelved items.
  • Assist in moving and processing physical items.
