Job summary

GBMC HealthCare is seeking a Senior Lab Assistant to receive, accession, and process pathology and laboratory specimens, and to provide reports and information to customers. This role includes training and mentoring Phlebotomy lab Assistants and supports a 2:30–11:00 PM shift with rotating weekends/holidays.

Qualifications include a high school diploma and at least 2 years of clinical lab experience, strong medical terminology knowledge, and excellent communication and typing skills.

Qualifications

• 2 years clinical laboratory work experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Ability to type accurately and quickly.

Responsibilities

• Enter patient demographic information, laboratory tests orders, and verify collection/receipt of specimens with completeness and accuracy.
• Assign daily workload and ensure adequate coverage to include the ON-Call schedule in a timely manner with changes approved by Supervisor.
• Assist in orienting and training of new employees.
• Prepare and process specimens for all testing in the clinical laboratory including labeling, measuring, aliquoting, centrifuging, and distribution.
• Assist with development/revision of work procedures and evaluation of staff.
• Assist during computer downtime and ensure staff understand procedures.
• Support competency skills testing and ensure timely completion of tests for all staff.
• Ensure samples are accurate for referral testing and that referral documentation is complete.
• Review unreceived reports daily.
• Participate in the Laboratory continuing education program and share knowledge from seminars.
• Ensure patient samples are properly identified and requisitions double checked for correct orders.
• Complete tasks such as centrifuge maintenance, label printers maintenance, and supply stock.
