Job summary

Canoo is seeking an eMotor Design Engineer to lead the design, analysis, and validation of drive unit electric motors for automotive powertrains. You will work with CAE and system engineers to integrate motor, geartrain, cooling, and power electronics for mass production.

The role requires hands-on development and testing of IPM and induction motors, strong EM analysis skills, and collaboration with suppliers to meet stringent durability and efficiency targets. Equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar.
  • 3 years of automotive powertrain development and validation experience, including rotating electric machine, NVH, and power electronic disciplines.
  • Experience with development and validation of electric drive unit components from prototype to production.
  • Design and test experience with electric motors (IPM and induction) and electromagnetic design software (JMAG/COMSOL/MotorCAD).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and thermal physics.
  • Strong understanding of electric motors and motor test methodology.
  • Experience with Test–Simulation correlation in component/sub-system/models.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to present results to multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Create conceptual designs, perform analyses, develop detailed designs, and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Collaborate with drive unit suppliers and set requirements and quality standards.
  • Drive design and development of eMotors for powertrains from concept to fabrication.
  • Support high‑performance motors and resolvers through design improvements.
  • Define test conditions and pass/fail criteria for subsystems and completed systems.
  • Correlate test results to life predictions and refine models with CAE engineers.
  • Post‑process results and recommend design changes to improve durability and efficiency.
  • Support vehicle testing to correlate bench/dyno testing.
