Job summary

Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) is hiring an Emergency Veterinary Assistant Shift Lead for our Columbia, MD location. You will help manage the flow of busy veterinary emergencies, coach the team, and ensure top-tier patient care while supporting your VEGgies throughout each shift.

The role requires a CVT/RVT/LVMT credential or enrollment in VEG’s credentialing program, plus 1+ years in veterinary tech/assistant roles.

Qualifications

• Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT/RVT/LVT/LVMT) or enrolled in VEG Credentialing Support Program preferred.
• 1+ years of experience in a veterinary technician or assistant role; emergency or specialty medicine preferred.
• Strong grasp of clinical workflow and team dynamics.
• Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills.
• Leadership instincts and ownership mindset; willingness to grow professionally.
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with practice management software and EMR.

Responsibilities

• Monitor patient status, team capacity, and shift-wide needs.
• Manage daily workflow and pivot during unexpected events.
• Assign and clarify shift roles; lead on-floor coaching.
• Step in on the floor as needed; perform tasks to support the team.
• Coordinate breaks, resolve conflicts, and model calm under pressure.
• Lead shift transitions, huddles, and end-of-day wrap-ups.
• Communicate clearly and escalate key issues when necessary.
• Turn downtime into learning opportunities and moments to reset.
• Flag incidents for transparency and growth; work with leadership on coverage.
• Collaborate with hospital leadership on coverage and ongoing coaching.
