Job summary

VEG ER for Pets in Asheville, NC seeks a per diem Emergency Veterinary Assistant to join the team. You will be at the heart of action, supporting the team, comforting pet parents, and learning real-time skills across triage, treatments, and care.

You’ll grow with guidance toward credentialed technician pathways, with opportunities for anesthesia support, ultrasound, and more, while working in a fast-paced, pet‑loving environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program a plus.
• 1+ years in a veterinary assistant role (emergency or specialty experience is a bonus!).
• Basic computer skills and EMR software familiarity.
• Excellent communicator with clients and team.
• Fine motor skills for handling patients and equipment.
• Able to stand prolonged hours and lift up to 25 kg (40 kg with assistance).
• Willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays in a rotating schedule.

Responsibilities

• Be the first warm welcome and steady support, triaging incoming patients and guiding them toward care.
• Assist with treatments, nursing care, and diagnostics, from bloodwork and imaging to catheter placement and oxygen support.
• Work with credentialed technicians and veterinarians to set up and monitor anesthesia and sedation cases.
• Set up and manage IV fluids, blood transfusions, and medication administration.
• Support during all moments of care: outpatient or inpatient, exam room to treatment area.
• Join patient rounds and stay close to the clinical picture to ensure continuity of care.
• Learn CPR and pursue RECOVER Certified Rescuer training (provided).
• Grow into advanced responsibilities like anesthesia support and ultrasound through training pathways.
