Job summary

VEG is seeking a per diem Emergency Veterinary Assistant to be at the heart of the action from day one, supporting the team, comforting pet parents, and learning on the job. You’ll participate in triage, treatments, and patient care across inpatient and outpatient areas.

You’ll work alongside credentialed technicians and veterinarians, with opportunities to grow into anesthesia support, ultrasound, and more through guided training paths.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Enrolled in AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program is a plus.
• 1+ years in veterinary assistant role (emergency or specialty experience a bonus).
• Basic computer skills and EMR knowledge.
• Excellent communicator with pet parents and team.
• Fine motor skills for handling patients and equipment.
• Stand for prolonged hours and lift up to 25 kg (40 kg with assistance).
• Willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays on rotating basis.

Responsibilities

• Be the first warm welcome, triage patients, and guide them to care.
• Assist with treatments, nursing care, and diagnostics (bloodwork, imaging, IV placement, oxygen support).
• Work with credentialed techs and veterinarians on anesthesia and sedation.
• Set up and manage IV fluids, transfusions, and medication administration.
• Assist during all care moments: outpatient or inpatient, exam room to treatment area.
• Join patient rounds to maintain continuity of care.
• Learn CPR and become RECOVER Certified Rescuer (training provided).
• Grow into advanced responsibilities such as anesthesia support, ultrasound, catheterization.
• As permitted by state law.
