Job summary

Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking a Student Success Advisor to support a diverse student population in a fully in-person role at the Tazewell campus. The position emphasizes planning interventions, connecting students tocollege and community resources, and tracking outreach to help students complete credentials or degrees.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, strong people skills, and a willingness to travel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education/experience.
  • Knowledge of barriers to educational success and desire to help others achieve goals.
  • Experience with racially, ethnically, economically and age diverse individuals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage, support, and motivate students.
  • Excellent customer service, follow-up, and follow-through.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficient in technology including Microsoft Office and Google docs.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Desire to learn and grow professionally.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a student population reflecting diverse backgrounds.
  • Provide resources, identify needs, and create plans for success for underserved students.
  • Proactively assist students in earning credentials or degrees with regular outreach and connections to support services.
  • Utilize technology solutions in addition to in-person interactions with students.
