Under general supervision, operates a variety of heavy vehicles and equipment. Position requires a high degree of operator skill. Additionally, may perform manual work duties as assigned. Works in Streets, Water Management, Sanitation and Environmental Services, or another City department.

A. Operates Vehicles, Equipment, and Machinery

  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment (CDL required) at least 50% of the time, which includes a large dump truck (10-ton capacity or larger), Gradall, 45ft or larger aerial bucket truck, storm sewer vacuum truck, boom tractor mower, single person leaf truck, tractor with brush hog, street sweeper, dump truck with brine equipment, mini excavator, 30 yard pull behind leaf collection, equipment skid steer.
  • Additionally, may operate backhoe, track hoe, street sweeper, small dump truck, salt spreader, asphalt sprayer, asphalt roller, skid loader, refuse truck, pickup truck, transfer station controls, tub grinder, tractor mower, bush hog, bobcat, leaf machine, chipper, jackhammer, road tractor, routesmart tablet, air compressor, hot box, mulch blower, hydroseeder, lawn mower, sprayer equipment, concrete grinder.
  • Monitors equipment operation to maintain safety and efficiency.
  • Highly skilled; capable of high precision work in tight quarters and safe, efficient operation in all conditions.

B. Performs Routine Equipment Maintenance

  • Inspects equipment and performs routine maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include checking fuel levels, replacing belts and fluids, greasing equipment, and washing/cleaning equipment.
  • Reports faulty equipment to supervisor.

C. Performs Manual Labor

  • May perform various manual tasks which may include digging holes/trenches, shoveling materials, applying asphalt to repair potholes; loading/unloading materials, lifting/moving discarded appliances and furniture or other heavy materials, and picking up debris/litter or dead animals.
  • Uses variety of power and hand tools, including chain saw, pruner, line trimmer, shovel, rake, pitchfork, broom, and radio communications equipment.

D. Performs Recordkeeping or Other Administrative Tasks

  • Receives various forms, reports, work orders, maps, or other documentation and reviews, completes, forwards, or retains as appropriate.

III. Other Job Duties

Performs other job duties as assigned, including:

  • May prepare and apply disinfectants/insecticides.
  • May place safety cones and signs and flag traffic.
  • May instruct others in equipment use.
  • Provides assistance or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.
  • Maintains responsibility for keeping work area in a clean and safe operating condition at all times.
  • On-Call Designation: This position is considered an On-Call eligible position and rotation on an On-Call team is required.

Is highly skilled in operating vehicles and equipment used in the performance of job tasks. Is knowledgeable in the maintenance of job-related equipment. Understands how to safely use required tools and supplies. Follow and comprehend work orders assigned by supervisor.
  • Language Skills: Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence. Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning Ability: Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. In decision making, some choices are known while others may need to be identified. Some reliance on precedent. Interpret a variety of complex instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Teamwork: Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions. Provides input into identifying and solving problems. Anticipates need of others for information about job tasks and work environment and provides it to them in a timely manner. Willingly assists others with job tasks when appropriate.

VII. Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires the incumbent to:

  • Remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Regularly move about around different worksites.
  • Constantly operates equipment or machinery such as heavy equipment (CDL required) at least 50% of the time, which includes a large dump truck (10 ton capacity or larger), Gradall, 45ft or larger aerial bucket truck, storm sewer vacuum truck, and/or boom tractor mower backhoe, track hoe, salt spreader, asphalt sprayer, asphalt roller, skid loader, refuse truck, pickup truck, transfer station controls, tub grinder (grinder operations), tractor mower, bush hog, bobcat, leaf machine, chipper, jackhammer, road tractor, routesmart tablet, air compressor.
  • Frequently positions self to maintain work area and items needed to complete daily tasks.
  • Regularly communicates information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Occasionally ascends/descends ladders.
  • Regularly moves/transports up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasionally moves/transports up to 100 pounds.

Work Environment: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires:

  • Frequent work near moving mechanical parts.
  • Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
  • Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to vibration.

The work environment is loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).

Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through high school diploma or general education degree (GED), plus three years of construction equipment operation related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Certifications/Licenses:

Driver License – CDL – A or B, as applicable.

  • Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control – Level I
