Job description

Full performance level in the daily operation of Solid Waste Transfer Station’s heavy equipment within a high traffic area. Under general supervision, controls the transferring, loading, and compacting of trash, recyclables, yard waste and other materials into semi-tractor trailers for transport to landfills in an efficient and safe manner.

Safely operates transfer station equipment (e.g. rubber tired front loaders, wheeled excavator, stationary excavator, skid steers/bobcat, roll-off truck, backhoe, street sweepers, snowplow, compactors, grinder) in high-traffic areas. Communicates with co-workers, customers, and contractors to maintain safe and efficient operations; directs inbound vehicles to dump their loads in proper location. Pushes trash into open top trailer, tamps and distributes load properly. Determines tonnage before and during loading of trailers and compacting to achieve an optimal payload and prevent trailer overloads. Continuously screens for hazardous and unacceptable materials in deposited trash and takes appropriate action. Adheres to safety rules and guidelines to protect self, co-workers, and the public.

Performs pre- and post-operation inspection of the equipment and performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment, requests repairs and scheduled servicing of equipment as required, prepares associated documentation.

Maintains vehicle cleanliness. Informs, directs, monitors, and controls public customers and commercial haulers at transfer stations. Keeps supervisor and co-workers informed of all potential safety or operational problems concerning solid waste transfer process and possible solutions in a timely manner.

Performs general assistance to operations and maintenance personnel (e.g. such as cleaning debris out of loading tunnels and tunnel ramps; removing snow, and street cleaning; sweeping, collecting litter and removing trash; cleaning and oiling equipment.

Equivalent to high school diploma plus either minimum one (1) year of experience in the daily operation and routine maintenance of the indicated equipment with valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements and acceptable driving record OR three (3) years of experience in the daily operation and routine maintenance of the indicated heavy equipment and must obtain temporary CDL within probation and secure CDL license within 12 months of hire date; must pass Department of Transportation physical exam. (Other Evidence may be submitted).
