Reporting to the Director of Facilities Operations, the Environmental Health & Safety Manager (EH&S) oversees and supports the Academy's environmental, health and safety programs and initiatives and supports recycling, resource conservation, and energy efficiency to complement the campus' sustainability efforts. The EH&S Manager works closely with campus personnel acting in an advisory role providing sound technical advice to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Environmental Oversight
- Ensure compliance of all requirements under various state and federal environmental regulatory programs
- Coordinate collection, storage, labeling, and disposal of regulated waste, special waste, laboratory waste, universal waste, and hazardous waste, including documented inspections, oversight of disposal vendor, signing manifests on behalf of the school, and record keeping.
- Manage ongoing implementation of asbestos programs, including AHERA and NESHAP, oversight of consultants and abatement vendors; maintain up-to-date management plans and record-keeping, including conducting semi-annual AHERA inspections and 3-year comprehensive 3rd party AHERA inspections.
- Manage ongoing implementation of Lead Compliant Housing and the Lead Renovation & Repair programs, including direction and oversight of consultants and abatement vendors; maintain up-to-date records concerning status of each campus residence, including oversight of notices and documentation.
- Manage Pest Control requests and vendors and maintain up-to-date Integrated Pest Management Plans for the school campus and Early Learning Center.
- Support campus environmental initiatives, such as recycling, composting and waste management, pollution prevention, and sustainability efforts
- Ensure appropriate and effective training sessions are held as required for environmental regulatory programs
Employee Health & Safety- Ensure compliance of requirements under various state and federal workplace safety programs
- Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify potential hazards, opportunities for improvement and ensure compliance with safety standards
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Human Resources, Dining, Security, and Facilities, to address safety concerns, promote a culture of safety, and improve overall safety performance
- Maintain Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database
- Act as an "EH&S" motivator and change agent for campus employees, ensuring environmental regulatory compliance and employee safety remains an active part of the work and the culture at Deerfield
- Manage departmental budget
- Stay current with changing safety regulations, industry standards, and best practices, ensuring the organization remains compliant
- Serve as the school's initial point of contact for work-related ergonomic, mold, indoor air quality and related workspace concerns
- Collaborate with others to investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near misses and implement corrective and preventive measures to prevent their recurrence.
- Ensure that appropriate and effective training sessions are held as required for safety-related regulatory programs
Recordkeeping Responsibilities- Manage all record-keeping and annual reporting as required under Tier II and the Massachusetts Environmental Results Program
- Manage monthly record-keeping and triennial reporting as required under the Massachusetts Source Registration Program.
- Maintain up-to-date Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan, including regular documented monthly campus-wide inspections.
- Manage record-keeping as required for fuel oil storage, including aboveground and underground storage tanks.
- Maintain record-keeping as needed to evaluate obligations under Massachusetts Greenhouse Gas reporting requirements.
- Collect and maintain information necessary for calculating the annual GHG emissions using the existing SIMAP software, database, and protocols.
- Manage record keeping and reporting under the DOER Large Building Energy Reporting program.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to maintain OSHA 300 Logs of injuries and illnesses
- Maintain Employee EHS training records as well as licenses and permits
- Maintain records of pressure vessel, elevator, and fire suppression system inspections

Job Specifications- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science or a related engineering discipline or sustainability field
- 5-7 years' experience in oversight of environmental and safety regulatory programs compliance
- Strong knowledge of federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations
- Ability to prepare and effectively present oral and written information concerning activities and operations to internal and external constituents
- Ability and willingness to obtain other relevant training or licenses as needed
- Excellent verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Willingness to provide emergency response support for the campus during working hours and from time to time off work hours.
- High level of quantitative skills to perform business-related calculations with accuracy
- Ability to manage, and sensitivity to, highly confidential information
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents, to include statutes and state and federal regulations.
- Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
- Ability to create and deliver presentations to a varied audience,
- Proficiency with technology (Microsoft Office Suite, Web filings/uploads, Excel, etc) to report, develop, and document independent systems and protocols for related work; ability to learn other software and applications as needed
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to design and conduct effective training programs
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team

- Valid Driver's License required
Physical Demands- Ability to sit at a desk for long periods of time
- Ability to occasionally climb ladders, stairs, ramps and poles
- Close visual acuity to view a computer terminal, inspect small parts, operate machines and motor vehicles
- Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, pull or move objects up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to frequently traverse a large campus with uneven ground on foot
Working Conditions- Worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions
- Worker is occasionally subject to hazards, including physical conditions, working proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, high heat and chemicals
- Worker is occasionally subject to atmospheric conditions, including fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, latex and mold
