Job Description
Job Title: Environmental Safety and Health Specialist
Reports to: Plant Manager
Key Responsibilities
- Regulatory Compliance & Audits
- Ensure compliance with federal (OSHA, EPA), state (MIOSHA, Michigan DEQ), and local regulations.
- Conduct routine safety inspections, risk assessments, and environmental audits.
- Maintain accurate records for hazardous waste (lead acids), SDS, and incident reports.
Hazard Identification & Mitigation- Evaluate risks related to battery manufacturing processes (chemical exposure, fire/explosion hazards, ergonomics).
- Recommend and implement engineering controls, PPE, and safety procedures.
- Lead incident investigations and root cause analysis to prevent recurrences.
Training & Employee Engagement- Develop and deliver EHS training programs (lockout/tagout, HAZMAT, emergency response).
- Promote a strong safety culture through toolbox talks, safety committees, and employee feedback systems.
- Collaborate with HR to address employee health concerns (exposure monitoring, ergonomic assessments).
Environmental & Sustainability Initiatives- Oversee waste management, air/water permitting, and spill prevention plans.
- Support sustainability efforts (recycling programs, energy efficiency improvements).
Qualifications & Skills
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
- 3+ years of EHS experience in manufacturing (chemical, battery, or automotive sectors).
- Knowledge of OSHA 1910, MIOSHA, EPA RCRA, and DOT hazardous materials regulations.
- Strong problem-solving skills with experience in incident investigation (5 Whys, Fishbone analysis).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, EHS management software.
Certifications:
- OSHA 30, CSP, CIH, or CHMM
- Experience with lead acid battery safety protocols.
