Job summary

Sterling Steel Company in Sterling, IL is seeking an Environmental Manager to lead compliance at a high-volume steel facility. You will direct audits, oversee waste streams, and ensure regulatory conformity while shaping sustainability initiatives.

You will prepare air and wastewater permits, coordinate hazardous waste management, and manage reporting, training, and safety programs for 275+ employees.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in environmental science, chemistry, or engineering or equivalent.
• Experience applying environmental regulations at industrial sites.
• Strong communication and project leadership skills.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and permits.
• Effective project management and delegation skills.
• Ability to review and apply environmental regulations (local, state, and federal).
• Experience reviewing engineering plans and contracts specifications is a plus.
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, chemistry, engineering, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ yrs related experience preferred
• Able to continually retain and apply new information.

Responsibilities

• Lead environmental audits and regulatory inspections.
• Prepare and submit permit applications and renewals.
• Oversee wastewater, drinking water, and on-site water treatment.
• Coordinate hazardous waste transport and disposal.
• Develop and implement SPCC, SWPP, and contingency plans.
• Maintain mandatory environmental reporting and records.
• Provide safety training on HAZWOPER and related topics.
• Review and improve environmental strategies.
• Investigate incidents and develop action plans.
• Advise environmental consultants as needed.
• Engage in renewable/alternative energies and sustainability discussions.
• Attend relevant industry meetings and trainings.
• Provide annual HAZWOPER or RCRA safety training.
• Participate in weekly Management Staff meetings.
• Supervise Environmental Supervisor.
• Report to work as scheduled.
• Follow all SJPs and safety rules.
• All other duties as assigned.
