Job summary

The City of Gainesville is seeking an entry-level Transit Operator to learn operating revenue service vehicles and deliver safe, courteous service to riders in the community.

You will be trained to perform bus operations, fare handling, and rider assistance, with a focus on safety and reliability. A Florida driver license is required; a CDL with passenger endorsement is preferred and must be obtained within three weeks of training. This role may involve weekend and shift work.

Qualifications

• Three (3) verifiable, consecutive years of driving experience or equivalent training/experience.
• Pre-employment medical examination and drug screening.
• Valid Florida Driver License with up to 4 points and no more than one moving violation; CDL Class A/B with passenger endorsement preferred; must obtain CDL within 3 weeks after training starts.

Responsibilities

• Safely operates all agency revenue service vehicles on assigned routes.
• Manage farebox transactions and record passenger data by fare type.
• Collect fares, issue transfers, and verify passes and IDs.
• Provide first-line customer service and information to riders; ensure safe, clean environment.
• Perform pre- and post-operation vehicle inspections and report deficiencies.
• Coordinate with Control Center during emergencies and incidents.
• Assist wheelchair passengers and secure mobility devices per policy.
