Job summary

The City of Gainesville is seeking a Managerial/Technical lead for the Regional Transit System (RTS) Operations. This position directly supervises Transit/Paratransit Operators and coordinates all transit operations within established rules and union contracts, exercising independent judgment in field emergencies.

Responsibilities include supervising schedules, responding to public inquiries, conducting field surveys, and coordinating safety and training.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Plans, assigns, and reviews of the work of Transit/Paratransit Operators to ensure compliance with departmental rules and regulations.
  • Provides information to the public pertaining to routes, schedules, transfer points, location description, fares and other data related to transit operations and services. Responds to a variety of requests for transit information and location of public buildings, churches, schools, and other structures.
  • Maintains route maps and schedules of departures and arrivals; estimates route distances and calculates intermediate arrival times.
  • Answers complaints and refers to inquiries from the public concerning other transit services such as lost and found, charter inquiries and advertising.
  • Contacts Transit/Paratransit Operators on assignment to give special instruction and render any assistance that may be required.
  • Compiles reports on accidents at the scene, including photographs, measurements, sketches and witness statements; cooperates with law enforcement agencies investigating accidents.
  • Coordinates the removal and replacement of transit vehicles having mechanical difficulty in the field; supervises the transfer of passengers and rescheduling as needed to maintain adequate service.
  • Conducts field surveys to determine passenger load factors, time interval of runs, adequacy of service, and proper location of bus zones; observes traffic movements and flow to assist scheduling.
  • Assists the public at major route junctions or in the operation of charter, shuttle and other high density special service runs.
  • Provides continuous inspection of operator driving methods to ensure compliance with departmental safety regulations.
  • Assists instructor with training reports on new operators; maintains surveillance of unsafe acts or conditions that might result in accident or injury. Addresses internal concerns regarding driver and bus safety.
  • Resolves differences between operators and employees and/or operators and passengers.
  • Coordinates field operations involving special events.
  • Acts as a first responder to coordinate emergency services.
  • Processes the Community Report and recommends corrective action and/or discipline, if necessary. Reports rule violations and recommend disciplinary actions.
  • Attends work on continuous and regular basis.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Operates any RTS vehicle during temporary driver shortages or emergency situations.
  • Functions as a dispatcher as needed.
