Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Chattanooga, TN seeks an Assistant Substation Engineer to support the design and construction of high-voltage substations (13kV–765kV). You will assist with design packages, calculations, and deliverables under a licensed P.E.

supervision, collaborating with project teams to meet client needs and budgets. The role emphasizes basic engineering techniques, strong communication, and willingness to learn within a QA/QC framework.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field from a recognized, accredited program required.
• ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
• Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
• Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in designing substation projects from conceptual phase through completion.
• Assist in developing substation design packages including physical arrangement, protective relaying and control, grounding studies, lighting and security.
• Develop substation calculations for insulation, AC/DC systems, voltage drop, cable sizing and conduit fill.
• Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specs and bill of materials.
