Job summary

BGE, Inc in Austin, TX is seeking a Junior Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to support the delivery of instrumentation, control, and automation solutions for energy services projects. You will work under senior staff on project tasks, prepare drawings, and contribute to safe, reliable energy solutions.

This entry-level role emphasizes mentorship, learning, and hands-on field work, including instrument sizing, loop diagrams, and PLC/DCS concepts.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Control Systems Engineering from an accredited university required.
• Must have passed or be eligible to sit for the FE exam by the time of graduation.
• 0 to 2 years of instrumentation and controls engineering experience. Internships, co‑ops, undergraduate research, or capstone work related to process control, automation, energy services, oil and gas, power systems, or engineering consulting preferred.
• Coursework-level knowledge of process measurement for flow, level, pressure, temperature, and analytical variables, along with final control elements, control loop fundamentals, and PID control.
• Exposure to PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, safety instrumented systems, custody transfer or allocation metering, control panels, or industrial networks preferred.
• Knowledge of NFPA, IEEE, ANSI, ISA standards with willingness to learn.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, Revit, SmartPlant Instrumentation, MATLAB, or Python.

Responsibilities

• Assist with instrumentation and controls design and production of deliverables for energy services projects.
• Prepare instrumentation and controls design documents under a senior engineer.
• Support instrument sizing and selection calculations for senior review.
• Learn control system architecture and protocol selection and gather information for network layouts.
• Draft control narratives, technical reports, and construction documents for review.
• Perform self-checks and assist with quality control at project milestones.
• Help resolve routine design issues and elevate complex items to a senior engineer.
• Support factory acceptance testing, looping checks, and startup under supervision.
• Communicate with project teams, vendors, and contractors, and participate in meetings with notes and action items.
• Build knowledge through mentorship and hands-on project work, and share lessons learned.
