Job summary

Buffalo Public Schools seeks an Assistant Legal Counsel I to provide entry-level professional legal services in education law, including special education and labor matters. The role supports the Legal Counsel, may represent the District in court, and helps develop and interpret district policies.

The position requires NYS Bar admission, strong writing and oral communication, and the ability to work under supervision with potential supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Graduation from a Law School of recognized standing.
• Admission to the New York State Bar or proof that requirements for admission are complete and pending.
• Maintain good standing in the NYS Bar during employment.
• Must attain admission to the U.S. District Court within one year of appointment.
• Fulfill biannual New York State continuing legal education requirements.

Responsibilities

• Counsels with and advises district departments, schools and officials on laws affecting the School District.
• Defends the District in court and before state/federal agencies as needed.
• Researches and drafts legal documents and briefs for review by senior attorneys.
• Attend meetings and provide legal assistance to district leadership as required.
• Interview and prepare witnesses for depositions and hearings.
• Train administrators and teachers on legal implications of education law and student discipline.
• Drafts and reviews contracts, real estate documents, and related legal instruments.
• Performs legal research related to all duties performed.
