Job summary

Buffalo Public Schools seeks an Assistant Legal Counsel II (Exempt) to support the Legal Department in education, labor, and municipal law. The role includes representing the district in federal and state courts and in administrative proceedings, and developing and interpreting district policy.

The candidate will draft and review legal documents, advise district officials, and supervise other attorneys as assigned by the Legal Counsel. Strong analytical and communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

• JD required; law degree from a recognized school.
• Three years of full-time experience as a practicing attorney including arbitration, defense work, research and writing.

Responsibilities

• Counsels with and advises departments and officials on matters of law and policy.
• Represents the District in state and federal courts and in administrative proceedings.
• Drafts, researches and submits legal documents and briefs to courts.
• Performs legal work related to contracts, real estate, and school district regulations.
• Provides training on legal implications of education and student discipline.
