Job summary

Illinois Education Job Bank is assisting in the recruitment of an Assistant Legal Counsel to advise the Illinois State Board of Education, State Superintendent, and Agency staff on general education law matters.

You will draft opinions, regulations, and guidance; oversee litigation; support policy development and educator licensure issues; and ensure labor law compliance. A law degree and Illinois license are required, with at least two years in education law.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in Illinois.
• At least two years of experience as a licensed attorney in Education Law or a related field.
• Knowledge of Education Law.
• Preferred: Knowledge of the Illinois School Code, Open Meetings Act, educator licensure, and labor and employment law.

Responsibilities

• Researches applicable law, regulations and non-regulatory guidance and drafts legal opinions, legislation, administrative rules, guidance, and other documents.
• Provides legal and program guidance to policy and strategic decision-making.
• Oversees relevant litigation and administrative proceedings.
• Participates in Agency and external committees and task forces.
• Advises and counsels on educator licensure matters and labor law.
• Provides technical assistance to school administrators and other constituents as appropriate.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
