Job summary

Catawba County Government is seeking an entry-level Staff Engineer to begin a career in civil and environmental engineering, with emphasis on solid waste, stormwater, water and wastewater, infrastructure, and air quality.

The Staff Engineer will work in a team environment and report to the Engineering Supervisor, gaining exposure to fieldwork, testing, erosion and sedimentation control inspections, modeling, and reporting.

Qualifications

• FE Certification or ability to obtain during probation
• Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
• Understanding of construction means, methods, and best practices
• Excellent writing and oral communication skills
• Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with the public and other professionals
• Ability to exercise independent judgment in applying standards
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• This position is light work; ability to lift up to 20 pounds; sitting most of the time with walking during inspections

Responsibilities

• Project construction oversight (landfill, and/or water/sewer)
• Perform field inspections for sedimentation and erosion control small site permits
• Record inspection results into SmartGov or similar software
• Provide communication and guidance to owners/contractors for compliance
• Perform field work related to Landfill State permitting compliance
• System modeling of water and sewer infrastructure
• Prepare technical memoranda, electronic deliverables, and/or reports
• Evaluate concrete and street paving conditions
• Calculate material quantities and generate cost estimates
