Job summary

The City of Aurora is seeking an Emergency Communications Specialist I to join the Aurora911 team. You will handle 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls, perform essential call-taking and dispatch duties, and support critical life-safety operations.

Successful candidates complete the basic training, obtain required certifications, and progress through a structured training and career framework within this essential public-safety role.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Successful completion of Aurora911 Basic Training Program, including CCIC/NCIC, EMD, EFD, CPR certifications.
• NCIC/CCIC Certification required.
• NIMS 100, 200, 700 Certifications required.
• Certification in CPR and First Aid required.
• MPDS Certification required.
• FPDS Certification required.
• PPDS Certification required.
• CTO Certification may be required for training capacity.

Responsibilities

• Receive and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire, ambulance and other services.
• Provide pre-arrival medical instructions and lifesaving guidance.
• Operate 911 call handling systems, CAD and related equipment.
• Enter data into computer-aided dispatch systems and initiate responses.
• Assist non-emergency callers and refer to appropriate agencies.
• Read and interpret maps to locate areas and determine locations from maps.
• Maintain logs, records, and statistics of calls and dispatch activity.
• Support training and act as mentor when assigned.
• Work in a 24-hour environment with shifts including nights and weekends.
