Job summary

Duke Energy is seeking a versatile Engineering Technologist to support the construction and preparation of work orders for residential subdivisions and mixed-use developments. The role combines field and office duties in a hybrid environment, serving a major electrical utility with growth opportunities and competitive benefits.

The candidate will advance engineering tasks, prepare distribution work orders, and contribute to the reliability of the electrical grid while collaborating across teams

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Either BS in engineering or Engineering Technology with no experience, or 2+ years with an Associate degree, or 4+ years of equivalent experience

Responsibilities

  • Work within a team environment and collaborates across multiple work groups to accomplish common goals
  • Applies technical expertise in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems in electrical distribution and other utility systems
  • Independently prepares thorough and accurate work orders, technical reports, correspondence, documentation, electrical and mechanical calculations and sketches
  • Communicates frequently and consistently with customers both internal and external to ensure satisfaction
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives that follow established processes through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities
  • Applies developing level knowledge in preparing thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches
  • Conducts engineering and related studies and performs design work for field construction
  • Strives to continually develop, transform and improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills

Job Summary

This role is to advance customer service in the preparation and construction of work orders to build a smarter energy future for new Residential Subdivisions and mixed-use developments. The successful candidate has the desire, skills, and abilities to prepare designed distribution work orders and make a difference in the growth and improvement of the electrical distribution system to energize the communities we serve.

Engineering Technologist II

The Engineering Technologist II position is second level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role job classification. The Engineering Technologist II applies technical expertise to solve more complex problems and management skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with general supervision. Employees in the Engineering Technologist II position are expected to develop deeper technical skills and the ability to work with an increasing degree of independence.

Engineering Technologist I

This is the first level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role job classification. The Engineering Technologist I applies developing technical expertise to solve simple problems, and management skills to provide oversight of work in a specific area of developing expertise, with high direction and close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills in their field of study, and the ability to work with some degree of independence.

Required/Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology with no experience, OR
  • Associate degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology AND two (2) years minimum of experience, OR
  • In lieu of above degrees and experience listed above, high school diploma/GED AND four (4) years minimum of equivalent experience

  • Associates Degree in Engineering Technology, OR
  • In lieu of above degrees and experience, high school diploma/GED and two (2) years minimum of equivalent experience
Specific Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Either Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology with no experience, or 2+ years of experience with Associate Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, or 4+ years of equivalent experience without a degree
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • In addition to desired degree, 2 years related work experience
  • Experience in the electrical utility industry preparing distribution line work orders
  • Bachelors degree in engineering, engineering technology, and/or business administration
  • Understanding of basic principles and practical applications of electrical grid operations
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
  • Work will be performed both in an office setting and in a field setting
