Qualifications

Position Summary

"Depending upon the qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.” The successful candidate for this position will develop complex engineering designs to connect new customers to the grid in the Durham / Chapel Hill area. This includes new residences, commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and EV charging infrastructure. This position will require visiting customer jobsites locally as well as office design work. The successful candidate will possess good verbal and written communication skills and good organization skills.

Engineering Technologist Levels

The Engineering Technologist III position is the third level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role. An Engineering Technologist III provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems and leadership skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with some supervision. Employees in the Engineering Technologist III position are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with a high degree of independence.

The Senior Engineering Technologist position is the fourth level of the non-Engineering degreed technical support role. The Senior Engineering Technologist provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems, and leadership skills to manage work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Employees in the Senior Engineering Technologist position are expected to develop advanced skills and work independently with increased latitude for un-reviewed work.

Responsibilities
  • Follow set guidelines or procedures for tasks.
  • Have the authority to make significant choices and decisions without specific guidance or direction from the Manager.
  • Apply technical expertise in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems in area of expertise.
  • Ensure accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities.
  • Conduct engineering and related studies to prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches with limited guidance.
  • Strive to continually improve job-related, technical, and professional knowledge, skills and performance of self and junior engineers.
  • Work as One to develop and promote positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities within group and cross work-group boundaries.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Participate in other assigned duties during emergency or storm events.
  • Support the company's goals and represent the company positively and professionally.
Required/Basic Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

  • Engineering Tech III:
    • Associates degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent).
    • 5 years related work experience.
    • In lieu of the degree and 5 years’ experience, High School/GED and 9 years related work experience.
  • Sr Engineering Tech:
    • Associates degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent).
    • 8 years related work experience.
    • In lieu of the degree and 8 years' experience, High School/GED and 12 years related work experience.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology.
  • 5 years related work experience.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Able to effectively apply basic principles of project management.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
Working Conditions

Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.

Specific Requirements
  • Either 3+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 5+ years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 9+ years equivalent experience without a degree.
  • Valid driver's license.
