Job summary

Blackhawk Network is seeking a Manager II, Engineering to lead a distributed team across the US, including hands-on coding, architecture review, and roadmap ownership. You will collaborate with Product Owners, manage sprint execution, and drive cost optimization on AWS.

The role requires 8+ years of Java development and 2+ years of leadership, with a strong focus on scalable, low-latency systems, security, and AI/ML integration.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of hands-on professional experience building commercial products with Java.
• 2+ years of management experience leading distributed engineering teams.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent; Master’s degree a plus.
• Significant experience designing and building REST services and microservice architectures.
• Proven experience designing scalable, high-throughput, low-latency systems.
• Relational and NoSQL database design and SQL.
• Security best practices (OWASP) for web apps.
• Experience in AWS cloud environments, cost management, and optimization.
• Experience using Agile methodologies to plan and deliver increments of functionality.
• Knowledge of ML concepts to collaborate with Data Science on risk model integration.
• Strong grasp of AI/LLM concepts and adoption of AI solutions in engineering.
• Ability to analyze fraud patterns and translate findings into engineering decisions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Directly manage ~10 engineers across multiple US locations, handling career growth, performance, hiring, and team health.
• Contribute code, review architecture decisions, and unblock technical work on Protego roadmap items.
• Partner with Product Owners to shape Risk Engineering roadmap.
• Own sprint execution and Jira processes, backlog grooming, sprint planning, velocity.
• Manage stakeholder relationships across Risk Ops, Compliance, Payments, and Identity teams.
• Own AWS cost accountability and drive optimization aligned with sustainability goals.
• Promote AI-assisted engineering practices using tools like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot.
• Represent team in cross-functional planning and elevate blockers proactively.
