The New York Times Company is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Compute and Storage team within the Data Platform. You will guide architecture, oversee compute and lakehouse storage platforms, and promote a culture of collaboration and reliability across cross-functional partners.

You will manage budgets, drive availability and performance goals, and help scale our data infrastructure in a hybrid New York City-based role. Expect 2–3+ days in the office weekly.

Qualifications

• 1+ years as an engineering manager with cross-functional partners.
• 5+ years in software or data infrastructure engineering building scalable systems.
• Experience running production cloud infrastructure on Kubernetes.
• Proven ability to define SLOs/SLAs, monitoring and incident management.
• Strong technical fluency; able to guide architecture discussions.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of engineers and foster collaboration and continuous improvement.
• Oversee roadmap for compute, streaming, orchestration and lakehouse storage.
• Set standards for shared platform code and engine integrations.
• Define and track availability, provisioning speed, and query performance goals.
• Establish on-call practices, automation, SLAs, and escalation paths.
• Partner with product/engineering teams to enable self-service capabilities.
• Develop budgets, forecasts and cost attribution models.
