Engineering Manager Position Outline

The Engineering Manager supervises and oversees the hotel's base building mechanical equipment, engineering operations, and engineering staff. The Engineering Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the Engineering Department and coordinating with the Area Chief Engineer, General Manager, and Senior Management Team to ensure all hotel needs and functions are properly supported.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Manage daily engineering activities, communicate department goals, implement schedules, and ensure engineering associates have the tools, supplies, and equipment needed to perform their job duties
  • Supervise, train, coach, and develop engineering associates to maintain high standards of performance and service
  • Coordinate with the Area Chief Engineer, General Manager, and hotel management team regarding engineering operations, repairs, maintenance, and hotel needs
  • Train engineering associates to comply with corporate, local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and company standards
  • Manage and maintain the hotel's back-of-the-house preventive maintenance program
  • Ensure proper ordering and inventory of supplies, tools, and equipment while maintaining appropriate department par levels
  • Conduct regular maintenance checks of equipment and ensure all maintenance logs and records are completed properly
  • Ensure the cleanliness, organization, and orderliness of all engineering workspaces, shops, mechanical rooms, and storage areas
  • Attend Daily Operations Meetings and participate in company training as needed
  • Be available to work varying schedules based on the hotel's business needs, including nights, weekends, holidays, and after-hours
  • Perform any other duties within the scope, spirit, and purpose of the position as requested by the Area Chief Engineer and General Manager

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills
  • Previous Engineering experience, preferably in a hotel environment
  • HVAC knowledge
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to effectively analyze problems and make sound decisions
  • Computer skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve desired results
  • Ability to lead, train, and supervise engineering team members
  • Ability to work various schedules to reflect the hotel's business needs, including nights, weekends, holidays, and after-hours

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Requires the ability to carry, lift, push, and pull items weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to stand and move frequently throughout the facility
  • Ability to handle objects, tools, and equipment required to maintain the property
  • Requires frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and crawling
  • Ability to work from ladders and at heights greater than 4 feet when required
  • Ability to tolerate noisy environments, hot or cold temperatures, and confined spaces
  • Ability to safely perform hands-on maintenance and repair work throughout the hotel

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 3+ years of experience in a hotel in a similar engineering role is required. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of working collaboratively with others to achieve desired results, as well as strong skills in problem analysis, troubleshooting, problem‑solving, and decision‑making.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Technical, vocational, or engineering‑related training is a plus
