Job description

Universal Orlando Resort - Control Systems Engineer

Universal Orlando Resort values in-person collaboration, with many Team Members working at least three days a week onsite. Some roles may offer limited remote opportunities, which will be discussed during recruitment.

Job Summary

Designs and develops show and ride control systems for theme park attractions to enhance reliability and operational efficiency. Supports downtime recovery, troubleshooting, fault analysis, redesign, testing, and startup of Ride and Show systems. Ensures all work complies with ASTM F24 guidelines and relevant codes and standards including AISC, ASME, ASTM, ANSI, AWS, JIC, NEC, and OSHA.

Major Responsibilities
  1. Develops detailed design solutions to improve operational reliability, safety, and serviceability of Ride & Show systems, focusing on diagnostics, technical training, and preventative maintenance.
  2. Troubleshoots electromechanical systems, performs fault analysis, and facilitates downtime recovery, acting as a liaison between Engineering, Ride & Show, and Operations teams.
  3. Manages projects from design through installation, including scheduling, testing, training, and budgeting.
  4. Creates engineering documentation such as control system hardware analysis, firmware analysis, CAD drawings, change bulletins, and training procedures; develops Acceptance Test Procedures.
  5. Uses project management skills to monitor and report on project progress to relevant teams and management.
  6. Performs engineering calculations related to electrical and control systems design and analysis.
  7. Follows Environmental, Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  8. Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering Technology, or Computer Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in control systems engineering, including PLCs, ladder logic, VFDs, and servo controls in a theme park environment, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Preferred: Certification in Functional Safety from a recognized institution.
Additional Preferences
  • Knowledge of ASTM and F24 standards, safety-critical system design, and servo controls for hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromotive systems.
  • Experience with control system specifications, acceptance testing, PLC programming (Rockwell, Siemens, Beckhoff, Omron, Pilz), and motor control systems.
  • Proficiency with high-level programming languages (C, Visual Basic, JAVA), electrical standards (UL 508A, NFPA, NEC), and industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, MODBUS).
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, and control systems, and working collaboratively in diverse teams.
