Job description

Universal Orlando Resort believes in-person collaboration is key to our success. Many of our Team Members work in a hybrid capacity, contributing from the workplace a minimum of three days per week. There are also roles that require being on-site full time. Limited remote opportunities may be available within specific departments. You’ll learn more about this during the recruitment process.

JOB SUMMARY:

Be a Safety Control System expert with knowledge of controls, electrical schematics, software experience, UO’s company safety philosophy, policies, standards, procedures, and cross-functional engineering skills. Provide safety signoff for Venue systems, equipment, components, ECNs, and TDs in compliance with UO Engineering Guidelines. Act as a liaison between Operations and Technical Services to ensure safety issues are addressed, mitigated, and corrective actions are followed. Support downtime recovery efforts by technical problem identification, performing System Risk Assessment and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA's), and ensure that Engineering Team Members understand the "lessons learned".

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Safety Control System Leadership:
    • Enforce UO’s safety policies, standards, and procedures, including Creative’s Standards, ASTM F24 Committee Guidelines, and regulations for all hardware and software control systems.
    • Review and provide feedback on design standards and specifications for new projects.
    • Participate in control equipment development, recommending specifications, process requirements, layout, maintainability, reliability, and security.
    • Provide safety signoff for controls/software systems, equipment, components, ECNs, and TDs.
    • Assist in developing and revising policies related to safety and configuration control.
    • Serve as a liaison to ensure safety issues are addressed during new project developments.
  2. Design and Oversight:
    • Contribute to hardware and software design from concept to opening.
    • Provide technical oversight for controls teams, vendors, and contractors.
    • Review safety design documents for new venues and systems.
    • Support commissioning and opening of new venues or modifications.
    • Collaborate with other departments to develop software, hardware, and controls, ensuring safety standards are met and properly archived.
    • Coordinate activities between vendors, ride managers, and technicians, providing project updates.
    • Evaluate vendor products and oversee testing and installation to ensure compliance.
    • Mentor controls and software engineers, recommending training for growth.
    • Participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities following UO policies.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related fields.
  • Desired: Master’s Degree or equivalent experience.
EXPERIENCE:
  • 10+ years in electrical/control system design, installation, safety, and fault analysis, specifically in theme park environments.
  • 3+ years as Safety Controls Engineer, with expertise in venue safety systems.
  • Experience with safety system approval, risk assessments, and system validation.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • PLC programming and troubleshooting.
  • AC/DC Drive configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Functional Safety Engineer or Machine Safety Expert certification.
  • Networking certifications (preferred).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of safety standards (ISO, IEC, UL, NEC, ASTM).
  • Experience in safety-critical systems design and motion control.
  • Proficiency with Allen Bradley PLCs, software platforms, and safety PLCs (Siemens).
  • Ability to perform detailed engineering calculations and system evaluations.
  • Experience with ride and show control systems in theme parks.
