Job summary

Redwood Materials is seeking a Functional Safety Engineer to lead safety compliance for energy storage systems. You will ensure alignment with UL 1998, UL 991, and UL 5500 and drive certification with NRTLs.

You will collaborate with engineering and product teams to embed safety requirements into development cycles, develop hazard analyses, and advance safe deployment of ESS technologies.

A passion for sustainability and strong communication with diverse stakeholders are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
• Hands-on experience with embedded software in safety-critical or regulated environments.
• Experience with microcontroller-based systems, low-level software/firmware.
• proficiency in C for real-time embedded systems.
• Strong background in UL 1998, UL 991, UL 5500.
• Familiarity with IEC 61508, IEC/UL 60730, ISO 26262, or ISO 13849 (preferred).
• Experience with Energy Storage Systems, power electronics, or safety-critical systems.
• Ability to apply hazard analysis, safety cases, and V&V planning.
• Experience managing compliance with third-party testing/certification bodies.

Responsibilities

• Lead compliance activities for ESS functional safety with a focus on UL 1998, UL 991, and UL 5500.
• Develop FMEAs, hazard analyses, safety cases, and test strategies.
• Coordinate with certification bodies to establish and manage compliance programs.
• Translate safety standards into actionable requirements for cross-functional teams.
• Coordinate hazard mitigation and validation strategies; support testing/verification.
• Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and product design to streamline safety processes.
