Job summary

HEAPY is seeking a Spring 2027 Optimization Engineering Co‑Op in Raleigh, NC. You will contribute to energy efficiency and building performance projects, gaining hands‑on experience with data analysis, commissioning, retro‑commissioning, and optimization tasks.

This internship targets engineering or sustainability-focused students who want a real impact, collaborative teamwork across disciplines, and a solid foundation for a career in energy, optimization, or sustainable design.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, or related field from an ABET-accredited program.
• Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the duration of a semester.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
• Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and attention to detail; effective communication and teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Develops and applies foundational engineering knowledge within the built environment.
• Supports energy studies, audits, and building system evaluations (HVAC, lighting, envelope, etc.).
• Assists with system installation verification and functional performance testing.
• Gathers, organizes, and analyzes data related to building performance and energy usage.
• Contributes to the preparation of energy calculations, reports, and technical documentation.
• Utilizes software tools for data analysis, visualization, and building performance evaluation.
• Participates in field observations and validation of equipment and system performance.
• Collaborates with project teams to support deliverables and meet deadlines.
• Builds understanding of commissioning, retro-commissioning, and optimization processes.
• Ensures accuracy and quality in all assigned work.
• Engages in continuous learning and professional development.
