Job summary

Porter-Leath in Memphis, Tennessee, seeks an Assistant Teacher for its Head Start program. You will assist classroom teachers and nutrition staff, relieve teachers during absences, and stay flexible to help all members of the Porter-Leath community.

Responsibilities include providing developmentally appropriate activities, supporting families, and delivering education and family services in line with Head Start and CACFP guidelines. This role emphasizes safety and teamwork.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required or CDA within 18 months of hire OR Associate’s degree or higher in Early Childhood Education or related field.
• Previous Head Start experience preferred.
• One year of relevant work experience with infants, toddlers, and/or preschoolers preferred.
• CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs duties per Head Start, DHS/TDOE, NAEYC, CACFP, USDA, and Porter-Leath standards in kitchen and classroom.
• Provides classroom coverage for Teachers/Assistant Teachers when absent.
• Plans and implements developmentally appropriate activities for one classroom of children.
• Mentors families and supports positive interactions.
• Communicates with nutrition, health, and education staff to meet special dietary needs.
• Delivers health, nutrition, disability, education, and family support services as required.
• Maintains accurate student files and educational records.
• Supports safe, learning-friendly environments and social-emotional growth.
• Attends meetings to support student development and outcomes.
