Job summary

Roanoke County Fire and Rescue Department seeks an Operational Medical Director to lead EMS medical oversight, establish education and guidelines, and evaluate the EMD program in coordination with the Chief and designees. The OMD will ensure patient safety, training standards, and adherence to policy across the EMS system.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an Accredited College/University with a medical degree and board certification to practice in Virginia.
• Extensive experience in emergency medicine involving cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, pediatric emergencies, and multitrauma.
• Progressively responsible EMS leadership experience or EMS agency OMD background preferred.
• Knowledge of Virginia EMS rules and regulations governing local emergency medical services.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical oversight for the EMS system and the ECC EMD program.
• Establish education, training, and proficiency standards for EMS personnel.
• Approve participation of pre-hospital providers under medical license and conduct audits.
• Develop and monitor system-wide EMS protocols and standing orders.
• Respond to incidents requiring medical oversight and advise on patient destination decisions.
• Collaborate with county staff, regional medical directors, and hospitals.
• Oversee the EMD program training and disaster preparedness input.
• Direct medical care instructions provided by Emergency Medical Dispatchers.
• Assist in designing EMD guide cards and emergency response procedures.
• Comply with Roanoke County policies and procedures.
