Depending on training and assignment, you may provide approved instructions before responders arrive, follow protocols, and maintain accurate documentation; overtime and rotating shifts are common.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; sponsor training or certification may be offered.
• CPR certification and EMS dispatcher credentials preferred.
• Certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher is commonly required before appointment.

Responsibilities

• Receive calls involving illness, injury, and other medical emergencies.
• Confirm the patient’s location, callback number, and access details.
• Ask approved questions about the patient’s condition to determine priority.
• Determine response priority through the medical dispatch system.
• Dispatch or coordinate ambulance resources when assigned.
• Provide protocol-based instructions within current qualifications.
