Completes the registration process for emergency patients and direct admits sent to the emergency department. Collects patient liabilities upon discharge from the emergency department.Major Job FunctionsThe following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:Registers emergency service patients in a fast-paced environment, creating patient accounts within (90) seconds of patient’s arrivalQueries EAD and enters accurate patient demographics into the computer system to obtain the correct patient medical record number and account numberResponsible for placing patient identification armbands on all Emergency Department patients after accounts are created to ensure patient safetyDuring the registration process, the ED Access Representative obtains all demographic, guarantor, and insurance information and accurately document information into the registration systemPatients being placed in observation or admission status, the ED Access Representative will obtain a physician order to support services rendered.Performs insurance eligibility/benefit verification, utilizing an EDI transaction and documenting information within the appropriate registration systemInforms patient/guarantor of their liabilities and collects appropriate patient co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, and deposits at the point of dischargeProvides timely and continual coverage of assigned work area in order to offer prompt patient service and be available for all clinical partners registration needsOther duties as assignedMinimum QualificationsThe following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:Education and Formal Training:High school diploma or equivalent requiredCollege courses in Business, Medical Office Administration, Health Care Administration, and/or Computer Technology preferredWork Experience:2 years insurance/clerical experience within a hospital or medical office setting preferredKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English languageKnowledge of insurance and collection of payments preferredKnowledge of Microsoft Windows and basic functionality of personal computerAbility to type and perform data entry functionsExcellent verbal and written communication skillsCustomer service skills to a variety of customers from different cultural and economic backgrounds preferredCritical thinking skills and ability to problem-solve and multi-taskAbility to appropriately handle complexity and stress with the changing needs of the patients, families, visitors, and the Health SystemPhysical Requirements:Ability to communicate orally, see, and hear to collect informationManual dexterity to operate office equipmentSubject to eyestrain due to the many hours spent looking at a computer screenSitting or standing in intervals for long periods of timeNoise level is low to moderateAnswers telephone calls, uses personal computer, and other business machines extensivelyBends, reaches, pushes and pulls file drawers to file records and reportsAbility to transport patients and assist with baggageRegularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 poundsRequired Licenses and CertificationsCape Fear Valley Health System is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/Disability/Veteran/Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity
