  • 2 years insurance/clerical experience within a hospital or medical office setting preferred.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language.
  • Knowledge of insurance and collection of payments preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and basic functionality of personal computer.
  • Ability to type and perform data entry functions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Customer service skills to diverse customers preferred.
  • Critical thinking and ability to problem-solve and multi-task.
  • Ability to handle complexity and stress with changing patient needs and health system requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Registers emergency service patients in a fast-paced environment, creating patient accounts within 90 seconds of arrival.
  • Queries EAD and enters accurate patient demographics to obtain the correct MRN and account number.
  • Place patient identification armbands after accounts are created for patient safety.
  • Obtains all demographic, guarantor, and insurance information and documents it in the registration system.
  • For observation/admission statuses, obtains physician orders to support services rendered.
  • Performs insurance eligibility/benefit verification and documents in the registration system.
  • Informs patient/guarantor of liabilities and collects co-pays, co-insurances, deductibles, and deposits at discharge.
  • Maintains coverage of assigned work area and supports clinical partners’ registration needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Facility Cape Fear Valley Medical Center Location Fayetteville, North Carolina Department Emergency Department Registration Job Family Clerical Work Shift Variable (United States of America)

Summary Registers all patients in the adult and pediatric emergency departments. Completes the registration process for emergency patients and direct admits sent to the emergency department. Collects patient liabilities upon discharge from the emergency department.

Major Job Functions
  • Registers emergency service patients in a fast-paced environment, creating patient accounts within (90) seconds of patient’s arrival
  • Queries EAD and enters accurate patient demographics into the computer system to obtain the correct patient medical record number and account number
  • Responsible for placing patient identification armbands on all Emergency Department patients after accounts are created to ensure patient safety
  • During the registration process, the ED Access Representative obtains all demographic, guarantor, and insurance information and accurately document information into the registration system
  • Patients being placed in observation or admission status, the ED Access Representative will obtain a physician order to support services rendered
  • Performs insurance eligibility/benefit verification, utilizing an EDI transaction and documenting information within the appropriate registration system
  • Informs patient/guarantor of their liabilities and collects appropriate patient co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, and deposits at the point of discharge
  • Provides timely and continual coverage of assigned work area in order to offer prompt patient service and be available for all clinical partners registration needs
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education and Formal Training: High school diploma or equivalent required College courses in Business, Medical Office Administration, Health Care Administration, and/or Computer Technology preferred
  • Work Experience: 2 years insurance/clerical experience within a hospital or medical office setting preferred
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
    • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language
    • Knowledge of insurance and collection of payments preferred
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and basic functionality of personal computer
    • Ability to type and perform data entry functions
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Customer service skills to a variety of customers from different cultural and economic backgrounds preferred
    • Critical thinking skills and ability to problem-solve and multi-task
    • Ability to appropriately handle complexity and stress with the changing needs of the patients, families, visitors, and the Health System
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to communicate orally, see, and hear to collect information
  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment Subject to eyestrain due to the many hours spent looking at a computer screen
  • Sitting or standing in intervals for long periods of time Noise level is low to moderate
  • Answers telephone calls, uses personal computer, and other business machines extensively
  • Bends, reaches, pushes and pulls file drawers to file records and reports
  • Ability to transport patients and assist with baggage
  • Regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds
