Community Hospital Corporation seeks an organized Patient Access Clerk to streamline patient admissions for inpatient and outpatient testing or procedures. You will collect patient data, inform patients about policies, and distribute literature, reporting to the ED Registration Supervisor.

Responsibilities include registering patients, obtaining authorizations, verifying insurance, interviewing patients, and handling billing explanations with empathy and confidentiality in a fast-paced setting.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience in a medical office or hospital setting preferred (6 months).
  • Proficient with basic computer tasks and office equipment.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills in English.

Responsibilities

  • Register patients for hospital services from physician offices and pre-admit as needed.
  • Collect patient information and verify insurance eligibility and authorizations.
  • Interview patients and guardians for personal information, emergency contacts, and insurance data.
  • Explain billing, patient rights, and HIPAA; distribute hospital literature.
  • Collect copayments when due and forward to Business Office.
  • Know hospital policies and available services; liaise with departments.
  • Maintain professional interactions with patients and families, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Ensure documentation meets current standards and policies; answer phones and route info.

Arranges for the efficient and orderly admission of inpatients and admission of individuals who have hospital-based outpatient testing or procedures. Ensures that the patient information is collected and that patients are aware of hospital policies and procedures. Distributes appropriate information to ancillary departments. Reports to the ED Registration Supervisor.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Responsible for registering patients for hospital services from a physician’s office and pre-admitting these patients a needed.
  • Responsible for admitting requirements for patients scheduled for admissions and outpatient procedures, obtaining authorization and verifying insurance eligibility.
  • Responsible for interviewing patients or their representative, obtaining personal information or verifying information already on file, including emergency numbers and insurance information.

  • Provides information to the patient/representative about billing, complaint process, patient rights, and HIPAA. Distributes hospital specific literature.
  • Responsible, when previous arrangements have been made or a co-payment is required, to collect such payments, record payment and forward to the Business Office personnel.
  • Responsible for knowing hospital policies and being familiar with hospital services that are available.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well in stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensures confidentiality of patients’ records.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
  • Maintains good working relationships both within the department and with other departments.
  • Ensures that documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Answers the telephone in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family member.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Patient Access Supervisor.
BASIC SKILLS
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to type accurately with speed
  • Able to use office machines efficiently
  • Excellent customer services skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Prefers someone who has at least 6 months experience in a medical office or hospital setting.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional language a plus
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to lift 40lbs.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, or sit for long periods of time.
