Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor I to support the Counselor II in maintaining a nurturing preschool environment. You will help implement developmentally appropriate activities and ensure each child’s safety and growth through daily interactions.

The role emphasizes responsive caregiving, strong communication with families, and collaboration with leaders to deliver consistent programming across locations. A positive, energetic approach is essential for early childhood needs.

Qualifications

• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Shall be at least 16 years of age.
• Staff shall be in good character and reputation.
• Background checks and other pre-employment requirements.
• Ability to be on time for scheduled shifts.
• Ability to work at various program locations preferred.
• Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Supervision and Safety: Ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times, actively supervising activities, meals, and transitions.
• Support Activities: Assist in preparing and implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities across cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language domains.
• Child Engagement: Engage children in meaningful play, foster exploration, creativity, and critical thinking.
• Behavior Management: Support positive behavior guidance techniques and model appropriate behavior.
• Communication: Communicate with children, parents/guardians, staff, and YMCA leadership; provide feedback on progress and behavior.
• Professional Development: Participate in training sessions, staff meetings, and growth opportunities.
