Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads in Virginia is seeking a Counselor I to support the Counselor II in creating a nurturing preschool environment. Your enthusiasm and commitment to early childhood education will contribute to our programs.

You will supervise children, help implement age-appropriate activities, and foster safe, inclusive relationships. The role requires CPR/First Aid within 30 days and flexible hours across program locations.

Qualifications

• Shall be at least 16 years of age.
• Shall work under the supervision of an individual qualified to be a Program Lead.
• Staff shall be in good character and reputation.
• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Completes all pre-employment requirements including background checks.
• Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills appropriate for interacting with children.
• Ability to be on time, every time for scheduled shifts required.
• Ability to work at various program locations preferred.
• Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and ensure children's safety during activities, meals, and transitions.
• Assist in preparing and implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum.
• Engage children in meaningful play, foster exploration and creativity.
• Support positive behavior and model appropriate conduct.
• Communicate with parents, staff, and YMCA leadership about progress.
• Participate in training and professional development.
