Job summary

The Macon-Bibb County Consolidated Government is seeking an E-911 Communication Officer responsible for receiving, processing, and dispatching emergency and non-emergency information for the E-911 Communications Center.

Essential duties include operating emergency telecommunications and radio equipment, coordinating field responders, and transferring medical calls to ambulance services. A High School Diploma or equivalent is required, with POST certification compliance and typing proficiency.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; POST certification preferred.
  • Must be able to type 30 wpm and pass POST exam.
  • Familiarity with radios, computers, and office software is required.

Responsibilities

  • Operates emergency E-911 telecommunications equipment and records requests.
  • Dispatches law enforcement, fire, or other personnel and coordinates field response.
  • Maintains contact with field units and monitors status of responders.
  • Transfers medical calls to ambulance services and assesses life-threatening situations.
  • Monitors EMA radio traffic and weather statements for dissemination.
  • Operates GCIC/NCIC terminals to retrieve information for field units.

Job description

Summary

The E- 911 Communication Officer is responsible for receiving, processing, dispatching, and disbursing of emergency and non-emergency information, as pertains to the E-911 Communications Center.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Operates emergency E-911 telecommunications equipment, receives requests for emergency services, and properly records and transfers the request to the appropriate department or dispatch position.
  • Operates radio equipment to dispatch law enforcement, fire, or other personnel and equipment to handle emergencies and other services in the field.
  • Maintains contact with and coordinates the movement of field emergency response units, maintaining the status of each.
  • Maintains regular contact with police officers in the field to verify their location and ensure that adequate backup is available to respond to emergency calls.
  • Transfers medical calls to ambulance service and verifies if medical emergencies are of a life- threatening nature.
  • Monitors Emergency Management Agency (EMA) radio traffic.
  • Monitors weather computer system and coordinates the receipt and dissemination of all weather statements.
  • Performs specific duties at the fire consoles i.e. updating fire data, verifying premise information.
  • Operates Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminals verifying warrants, running criminal histories, and tags.
  • Operates GCIC/NCIC terminals to provide information requested and required by units in the field.
  • Works with the general public in dealing with emergency and non-emergency situations, providing necessary information or redirecting calls.
  • Operates communications support equipment as required.
Education, Training and Experience

The E-911 Communication Officer should possess, at a minimum, a High School Diploma or equivalent and some experience in public safety communications is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experiences which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Must be able to type 30 wpm. Must pass P.O.S.T. Certification Exam.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of the geography of Macon-Bibb County.
  • Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission regulations in the use of radio and telecommunications equipment.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and word processing and database programs, including Microsoft Office Suite, Windows NT network, the internet and e-mail services.
  • Knowledge of proper care and use of radio, telecommunications, and support equipment in the Communications Center.
  • Ability to observe situations and events analytically and objectively, and to record and react to these situations properly, clearly, and completely.
  • Ability to act and react calmly and quickly to emergencies.
  • Ability to speak clearly, using proper terminology.
  • Ability to handle situations courteously, tactfully, and firmly, with impartiality.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and with members of the general public.
