Job summary

Effingham County Board of Commissioners is seeking a full-time Communications Officer in the E-911 Center. You will receive emergency and non-emergency calls, gather and relay information, dispatch appropriate units, and support law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other responders.

The role requires sound judgment, calmness under pressure, and strong communication as you manage multiple priorities in a busy environment.

Qualifications

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Pass an extensive criminal history background check.
  • Be able to multi-task in a busy, hectic, and stressful environment.
  • Be able to become Georgia P.O.S.T. certified as a Basic Communications Officer within six months of the hire date.
  • Become certified and maintain certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher.
  • Become certified and maintain certification as a GCIC Terminal Operator.

Responsibilities

  • Receive emergency and non-emergency calls into the communications center.
  • Monitor police, fire, and EMS radio traffic.
  • Provide information, answer questions, and refer callers to appropriate staff or agencies.
  • Dispatch Sheriff’s Office, EMS and fire units.
  • Notify relevant agencies or personnel as needed.

Communications Officer, E-911

Full-Time

$18.95 per hour, Non-Certified

$20.20 per hour, Certified

Effingham County is accepting applications for a full-time Communications Officer in the E-911 Center. This position serves as a critical link between the public, emergency responders, and public safety agencies. Communications Officers receive emergency and non-emergency calls, gather and relay accurate information, dispatch appropriate units, and support law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other response personnel during routine and high-stress situations.

This position requires sound judgment, attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain calm while managing multiple priorities in a busy, hectic, and stressful environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Receiving emergency and non-emergency calls into the communications center.

  • Monitoring police, fire, and EMS radio traffic.

  • Providing information, answering questions, and referring callers to appropriate staff or agencies for emergency and non-emergency situations.

  • Receiving and processing calls for Animal Control.

  • Validating 911 address information.

  • Logging incoming calls and dispatch information into the CAD system.

  • Maintaining records of incoming calls and dispatching activities.

  • Assigning case numbers to calls.

  • Dispatching Sheriff’s Office, EMS, and fire units.

  • Dispatching wrecker service when needed.

  • Notifying the Coroner, State Troopers, Investigators, Funeral Homes, Fire Marshals, and other agencies or personnel as needed.

  • Advising field units of relevant information.

  • Disseminating criminal and driver records.

  • Maintaining various records, logs, and files.

  • Performing clerical support activities related to communications center operations.

  • Inquiring and entering information through the GCIC/NCIC computer system.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
