Brief Position Description:
The goal of the After-School Prevention Specialist position is to implement and expand healthy social emotional programs such as Girls on the Run (GOTR) and Boys Run I toowú klatseen (BRITK) for children and their families in Sitka, Alaska. This position will collaborate with partner agencies, including the Sitka School District and other social service agencies affiliated with the local prevention coalition, Pathways to a Safer Sitka, to effectively implement after-school prevention programs. Tasks include coaching, coordinating logistics, increasing student and volunteer participation, evaluating the impact, and expanding the messages of each program to other settings (e.g., home and community).
Day in Life of JV
The After-School Prevention Specialist will start their day by coming into their office at 201 Katlian St., an office located inside the Totem Square Hotel in Sitka, AK. They will check in with their supervisor, the Youth Program Manager, who shares an office space with them. Their supervisor will be available to check-in and assist them often throughout their week. Much of the day will be spent coordinating with partner agencies who contribute to Girls on the Run (GOTR) and Boys Run I toowú klatseen (BRITK), and planning for GOTR and BRITK practices. They’ll use templates and task lists created over many years of program implementation to guide their day-to-day tasks as well as receive support and direction from their supervisor. Prior to the season starting, they will recruit and train coaches for the programs, and connect with school district employees to recruit students to enroll in the programs. During the season, they will spend approximately 10 hours per week coaching students enrolled in the programs in addition to planning and coordinating several family engagement activities (e.g. a family pizza party, family practice, and weekly program newsletters), and a 5K at the end of each season, which typically brings in 100+ children, families, and community members. They’ll develop weekly public service announcements that are shared in the local newspaper and on the radio to expand the messages of the programs to the community. They will also manage program evaluation (e.g. administering pre- and post-season surveys) and reporting to ensure the programs are meeting their objectives and improvements can be made in the future. In addition to supporting these programs, they will meet with the entire prevention staff on a weekly basis, attend monthly SAFV all staff meetings, and attend monthly Family Engagement Workgroup meetings.

The After-School Prevention Specialist will drive three miles to and from the program site four times a week in a Hyundai Santa Fe. They should be prepared to drive in inclement weather conditions such as rain, snow, and/or darkness.
