The St. Francis House Client Choice Coordinator will serve in Anchorage, Alaska's largest food pantry and develop programs to address challenges of individual preference, health/dietary needs, and cultural specificity in the drive-thru food pantry model. This position will serve part-time outdoors and is a boots-on-the-ground, relationship-building role. As such, the JV/AmeriCorps member will also serve closely with program staff to connect clients with community resources that are specific to their needs
The JV/AmeriCorps member will arrive at service at 8:00 am to help program staff (a client coordinator and two pantry assistants) prepare for daily food pantry operations. The JV/AmeriCorps member will be serving outdoors when the food pantry is open from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, assisting with food distribution (this includes frequently and repetitively lifting 40+ lbs food boxes) and building relationships with clients. Clients will range from elders to refugee and immigrant families with language barriers to people experiencing homelessness. During these hours, the JV/AmeriCorps member will implement any client-choice programs they have designed, such as offering a culturally specific food box or providing nutritional education that addresses a particular health condition. When the pantry closes, they will take a 30-minute lunch break before returning to service. From 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm, the JV/AmeriCorps member will engage in a combination of researching/designing client-choice programs and/or implementing those strategies. Examples include packing meal kits, coordinating a group of volunteers to pack meal kits, responding to emails, and other computer-based tasks. JV/AmeriCorps member will also engage while assisting SFH donors.
