The Catalina Island Company is hiring a Dive Shop Clerk on Catalina Island to assist guests with renting and returning activity gear, conduct safety briefings, and share local site information. You will keep equipment clean, process POS transactions, and help with inventory while ensuring top-notch guest experiences in an outdoor setting.

This seasonal role requires 18+ and a passion for ocean activities, with opportunities for training and housing options on the island.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Retail or customer service experience required.
• Interest in scuba diving, snorkeling, or ocean sports strongly preferred.
• Basic math and computer/POS skills.
• Obtain a Fill Station Operator Certification within 30 days of employment.
• Excellent communication skills and strong organizational abilities.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers and provide excellent service to divers and waters-sports guests.
• Process point-of-sale transactions and rentals.
• Check rental equipment in and out and ensure proper cleaning and storage.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the retail floor and rental areas.
• Inform guests about rental policies, rates, and local attractions.
• Wash and dry all equipment daily after return.
• Assist with monthly inventory counts of retail and rental products.
• Ensure safety procedures for land and sea activities are followed.
• Address guest problems and coordinate with management as needed.
• Fill Station Operator Certification for scuba cylinders within 30 days.
• Maintain, wash, and service bikes and related gear.

JOB SUMMARY

As a Dive Shop Clerk, you are responsible for assisting guests with renting and returning activity equipment, conducting safety briefings for each activity, maintaining and cleaning all equipment, and offering guests information about notable locations to visit.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Greet customers and provide excellent customer service to divers, snorkelers, and waters-sports guests.
• Process point-of-sale transactions and rentals.
• Check rental equipment in and out and ensure proper cleaning and storage.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of all the retail floor, rental areas, and storage.
• Answer incoming calls and provide guests with information about rental policies, rates, and key areas of interest to visit.
• Wash and dry all kayak, snorkel, and dive equipment daily upon each return.
• Assist in performing monthly inventory counts of retail and rental products.
• Ensure land and sea activities safety procedures are always adhered to.
• Address and resolve guest problems and complaints, while keeping management informed.
• Fill Station Operator Certification for filling scuba cylinders with compressed gas.
• Maintain, wash, change tube tires and grease the mountain bikes.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be at least 18 years old.

• Obtain a Fill Station Operator Certification within 30 days of employment.

Position Type: Seasonal Season Dates: now- October

HOUSING

The Catalina Island Company offers shared housing as an option for eligible employees at a subsidized rate. Employees are responsible for paying a portion of the housing cost, typically deducted through payroll. Accommodation generally includes shared bedrooms, shared bathrooms and a community kitchen. Housing is subject to availability and cost will vary based on location.

PAY TRANSPARENCY

The pay scale for this position is $18.00 per hour.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position primarily takes place outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions including sun, wind, and occasional rain. Employees should be comfortable working at heights, on uneven terrain, and performing physical tasks such as walking, climbing, or lifting equipment. Safety, communication, and guest engagement are top priorities while ensuring a fun and memorable experience for all participants. Must be comfortable and able to stand for up to 6-8 hours per day. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. Requires dexterity, grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, management and team.

SCHEDULE

This position requires a flexible schedule, with rotating weekday and weekend shifts, including day, night, and holiday hours.
