Catalina Island Company is seeking a Dive Shop Clerk to assist guests with renting and returning activity equipment, conduct safety briefings, and provide information on notable locations to visit on Catalina Island. This seasonal role emphasizes excellent service and safety.

The position includes handling rentals, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a welcoming guest experience on a beautiful outdoor island setting. Housing is available on a shared basis for eligible employees.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Retail or customer service experience required.
• Interest in scuba diving, snorkeling, or ocean sports strongly preferred.
• Basic math and computer/POS skills.
• Obtain a Fill Station Operator Certification within 30 days of employment.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills.
• Experience in a fast-paced environment.
• Knowledge of dive industry preferred.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers and provide excellent customer service to divers, snorkelers, and waters-sports guests.
• Process point-of-sale transactions and rentals.
• Check rental equipment in and out and ensure proper cleaning and storage.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of all the retail floor, rental areas, and storage.
• Answer incoming calls and provide guests with information about rental policies, rates, and key areas of interest to visit.
• Wash and dry all kayak, snorkel, and dive equipment daily upon each return.
• Assist in performing monthly inventory counts of retail and rental products.
• Ensure land and sea activities safety procedures are always adhered to.
• Address and resolve guest problems and complaints, while keeping management informed.
• Fill Station Operator Certification for filling scuba cylinders with compressed gas.
• Maintain, wash, change tube tires and grease the mountain bikes.
• Other duties as assigned.

In 1919, chewing gum entrepreneur William Wrigley Jr. bought nearly every share of the Santa Catalina Island Company until he owned a controlling interest. It also became a popular location for production companies to shoot movies. More than 500 films, documentaries, commercials, and TV shows have been shot in and around Catalina over the years, especially in Two Harbors on the island's west end. To this day, descendants of William Wrigley Jr. still own the Catalina Island Company and carry on his vision to create a world-class island resort.

JOB SUMMARY

As a Dive Shop Clerk, you are responsible for assisting guests with renting and returning activity equipment, conducting safety briefings for each activity, maintaining and cleaning all equipment, and offering guests information about notable locations to visit.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

HOUSING

The Catalina Island Company offers shared housing as an option for eligible employees at a subsidized rate. Employees are responsible for paying a portion of the housing cost, typically deducted through payroll. Accommodation generally includes shared bedrooms, shared bathrooms and a community kitchen. Housing is subject to availability and cost will vary based on location.

PAY TRANSPARENCY

The pay scale for this position is $18.00 per hour.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position primarily takes place outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions including sun, wind, and occasional rain. Employees should be comfortable working at heights, on uneven terrain, and performing physical tasks such as walking, climbing, or lifting equipment. Safety, communication, and guest engagement are top priorities while ensuring a fun and memorable experience for all participants. Must be comfortable and able to stand for up to 6-8 hours per day.
