Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation seeks a District Traffic Engineer to provide strategic leadership for the District Traffic Engineering Section. You will direct traffic studies, plan reviews, project management, land development support and data collection to improve roadway safety and operations.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Experience applying traffic engineering and maintenance principles and practices to solve complex traffic problems.
• Experience developing and managing budgets and contracts.
• Experience in a leadership role with citizens, elected officials, the media and other organizations on traffic engineering issues and experience in handling large scale projects.
• Experience managing and providing strategic leadership to a traffic program and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences.
• Experience related to computer simulation, analysis and design software packages to solve traffic operational and safety problems.
• Knowledge of federal and state regulations, design standards and specifications related to traffic engineering.
• Knowledge of materials, equipment and methods related to traffic engineering maintenance activities.
• Knowledge of supervisory, leadership and management practices and principles to include hiring, discipline, performance management, and employee development.
• Valid Professional Engineer's license.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Provide budgets oversight to ensure expenditures do not exceed allocations for each functional area.
• Promote and communicate VDOT initiatives to diverse stakeholder groups and respond to inquiries from the public and agencies.
• Serve as primary point of contact representing the Traffic Engineering Section and establish customer service expectations.
• Provide strategic direction and oversight in financial management of TE assets and allocations.
• Lead and develop budgets for TE program and project budgets; ensure milestones and on-time delivery.
• Oversee TE region operations, including regional on-call contracts, ITS design, and arterial operations.
• Direct traffic engineering studies, plan reviews, land development support, and data collection.
• Direct and oversee design review, plan preparation, and field reviews of traffic control devices and related projects.
• Direct TE studies program covering speed limits, markings, signals, and safety data to improve traffic operations.
