Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a Senior Assistant District Engineer/LD to lead and manage roadway design projects, supervise staff, and coordinate with districts to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.

The role requires Civil Engineering expertise, a PE license, and strong communication, leadership and budget-management skills to guide complex transportation design initiatives and team development across multiple programs.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to supervise staff, programs and budgets.
• Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Experience building networks and relationships with divisions, staff, contractors and FHWA representatives.
• Knowledge of Civil Engineering principles as they relate to roadway design.
• Knowledge of roadway and transportation design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and agency policies and procedures.
• Leadership experience in project and program management, coaching and training others.
• Project management coursework and experience.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Valid Professional Engineer’s license.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with staff, public and other VDOT employees on engineering issues.
• Provide fiscal management and monitor budgets for assigned programs.
• Train and develop team members.
• Lead the management of roadway and transportation design projects within schedules, budgets and standards.
• Supervise, guide and provide direction to team members as needed.
• Represent VDOT in meetings with outside entities to resolve public concerns.
• Coordinate with district and residency staff to communicate project issues.
• Ensure delivery of projects on time and within budget.
