Job summary

Portage County Aging & Disability Resource Center (ARDC) is hiring a full-time Disability Benefits Specialist to counsel and assist adults with disabilities in obtaining and navigating benefits programs. The role includes office hours, home visits in rural areas, and information dissemination to the community.

The position emphasizes advocacy, coordination with agencies, and ongoing training to stay current on entitlement programs. A bachelor’s degree and driver’s license are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a health or human services related field; at least one year of experience with adults with developmental or physical disabilities or mental illness.
• Experience with Social Security, Medicare, Medical Assistance, SSI or as paralegal is helpful.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle for work-related travel.

Responsibilities

• Counsel and advocate for clients on private and government benefit programs.
• Provide information and assistance on how to access benefits.
• Keep regular office hours and make home visits in rural areas as needed.
• Prepare and file complaints, grievances, and appeals at local and state levels.
• Coordinate with agencies and refer clients to other services as appropriate.
• Maintain confidential files and complete reporting to state and Disability Rights Wisconsin.
